Mathematics for Teachers 1: Uncapping the CAPS Mathematics

This 2-day short course is designed to introduce South African teachers to the development of key mathematical concepts from an historical perspective set against the backdrop of the Curriculum and Policy Statement (CAPS) for Mathematics of the National Curriculum Statement (NCS) Grades R-12.

The course features focused reading, interactive presentations, workshops, group activities
and discussions. Participants will be challenged to demonstrate their understanding of the
material by preparing a short teaching unit based on the material covered.

Mathematics and Music: A Duet

This course is designed to introduce participants to the mathematics-related aspects of music, including overtones, scales, tuning systems, the musical dice games of Mozart and Haydn, the old English style of bell-ringing and other topics involving mathematical ideas from probability theory to group theory.  The only requirements for the course are an interest in and enthusiasm for both Mathematics and Music, as the mathematical and musical concepts are described in an elementary way.

The course will take place at St Augustine College on Saturday 01 October and Saturday 08 October 2016 from 09:00 to 17:00.
